Pre-conference workshops

SPO24 Pre-conference Workshops (180 minutes each)

Participation in the workshops is free of charge for conference attendees. The workshops will take place in the morning hours of the first day of the conference.

WS1: Instructor Filip Děchtěrenko

Online data collection with formR: an introduction to the open-source secure tool for collecting survey data, which allows, among other things, the sending of automated invitations and reminders, is adapted for use on smartphones, and offers a range of possibilities for interactive feedback, is integrated within R, and allows for the export of data in standard .csv or JSON documents. The workshop will focus on practical work using this tool, such as how to process data, conduct diary studies, or automate feedback.

WS2: Instructor Vladimír Chrz

Cultivating and developing sensitivity for the figural aspects of qualitative data: The workshop assumes that both qualitative analysis and interpretation, as well as the subject of its study (human experience), have an aesthetic/poetic dimension or aspect. This aspect refers to what can provisionally be called the figural nature of the examined data. It is assumed that human experience is shaped by figures and configurations (plots, genres, or styles of lived narratives, or more compound figures such as symbols, metaphors, metonyms, paradoxes, etc.). This method of analysis differs from the more commonly adopted, easier to learn and apply methods, which too often (regardless of the methodology) rely on the mechanical combination of themes (categories). In contrast, focusing on the figural aspects of (usually textual) data requires cultivating and developing a certain sensitivity to perceiving and understanding the altered figures and configurations. The workshop will initially present material on psychotherapeutic casuistry and resilience research among seniors to demonstrate the need to understand the figural aspects of the cases studied. Subsequently, various ways to cultivate and develop sensitivity to different types of figural aspects will be shown. These include self-experiential experimenting with creative understanding styles, such as symbolic interpretation, parallels and analogies, narrative constructions, metaphor and metonymy, absurdity, and paradox, etc.
